The NATO ASI will take place in Hotel Flagman in Sozopol, Bulgaria

Hotel Flagman

The town of Sozopol, situated on a scenic rocky peninsula, is one of the most beautiful and picturesque resorts at the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. Sozopol has a long history. The town was founded in 610 B.C. by Greek settlers and called Apollonia Pontica after Apollo, the patron of seafarers and colonizers. Soon it arose as an important centre of trade and arts. In 72 B.C. the town was conquered by the Roman legions of Marcus Lucullus and became a part of the Roman Empire. In 431 A.D. it appeared for the first time under the name of Sozopolis, the “City of Salvation”, after the Christianity was accepted. The town was incorporated into the First Bulgarian Kingdom in 812 under Khan Krum. From the period of the Bulgarian National Revival (second half of XVII – XIX centuries) a number of old houses from wood and stone were preserved. Clustered along the narrow peninsula’s cobblestone streets and alleys, some 45 houses were classified as UNESCO cultural monuments. Nowadays Sozopol attracts a lot of visitors not only with its cobblestone lanes and old houses, but also with the beautiful beaches and the pleasant weather. It possesses calm and relaxing atmosphere which has already shown several times to be an excellent place for events like NATO-ASI.
